- Steam valve sticking or slow to open. Salt air corrodes the small moving parts inside a steam valve faster than inland use does. I clean and lubricate first, and only replace the valve if corrosion has actually pitted the seat.
- Portafilter or group corrosion causing a poor seal. Pitting on the portafilter spout or group ring can cause dripping or a loose lock even when the gasket is fine. I check for corrosion before assuming the gasket needs replacing, since a new gasket will not fix a pitted metal surface.
- Weak brew pressure. Same as anywhere else, I gauge the group for real pressure and check the pump and OPV before opening the boiler. Coastal air does not cause this one on its own, so I rule out the ordinary causes first.
