ECM repair for German-built home espresso machines
ECM builds solid, no-nonsense German prosumer machines that sit squarely in the $3,000-and-up home tier: the Synchronika and Elektronika on dual boilers, the Technika, Classika, and Mechanika on heat exchanger designs. All of them run a proper E61 group, and the Synchronika adds a flow control paddle on the group itself so you can shape pressure through the shot, a feature that shows up on cafe machines twice its size.
We service ECM machines as independent technicians. We’re not an ECM dealer and we don’t hold a factory authorization on the brand. We work on these because we know E61 groups, heat exchangers, and dual boilers, not because of a manufacturer relationship.
What tends to break on ECM machines
- E61 group head. Worn group gaskets and dispersion screens, a solenoid valve that sticks or drips, seals that harden with age and heat.
- Flow control paddle (Synchronika). The paddle valve’s seals are a real wear point on a machine that gets used daily. We rebuild or replace the valve instead of the whole group.
- Heat exchanger circulation (Technika, Classika, Mechanika). Slow thermosiphon circulation shows up as sluggish temperature recovery between shots or temperature surfing at the group.
- Dual boiler faults (Synchronika, Elektronika). Brew and steam boilers run independently, so a weak steam side with a fine brew side (or the reverse) points at one boiler, not the whole machine.
- Pump and pressure. Rotary pump wear, an OPV that’s drifted off spec.
- Scale. Bay Area water is hard on any boiler, and a dual boiler scales on two chambers at once. We descale on a schedule instead of waiting for a failure.

How it works
We pick the machine up, diagnose it on the bench, and return it. The $150 deposit covers all three steps and is not credited toward repair. Extra bench time is $150 per hour. Are you an authorized ECM dealer?
No. We're an independent shop servicing ECM machines on their merits, not through a dealer or factory relationship. -
The flow control paddle on my Synchronika feels stiff or leaks. Is that normal?
No, and it's a common wear point. The paddle valve's seals wear with use. We rebuild or replace the valve rather than the whole group. -
My Technika takes a long time to come back to temperature between shots. Why?
Heat exchanger machines rely on thermosiphon circulation to stay stable. If that circulation slows, usually from scale or an aging thermosiphon loop, temperature recovery gets sluggish. We check that before touching the element.
