The WMF 2000 S is a proper hotel workhorse: two grinders, a chocolate hopper, eight drink buttons, and a queue of guests every morning. This one lives in a Bay Area hotel lobby and had started refusing drinks, showing “Please clean now” on the display and not much else.
The screen that gets our phone ringing. Our photo from the job, not a stock image.
What that message really means
On a 2000 S the cleaning prompt is not a suggestion. The machine counts cycles, and when it decides it has poured enough drinks since the last proper clean, it locks out until someone runs the program. Staff can usually run the tabs-and-rinse routine themselves. The trouble starts when the machine has been asking for a while and the inside has moved past what a rinse cycle can fix.
That is what we walked into here.
What we found inside
Top panel off: beans where beans should not be, and a film of coffee oil on everything.
With the panels off, both grinder assemblies were coated in old grounds and coffee oil, with whole beans scattered through the mechanism. Coffee oil is the quiet killer on super-automatics: it goes rancid, gums up the adjustment ring, and drags the dose off spec. You taste it in the cup before you see it in the machine.
The adjustment ring and chute before cleaning. That brown film is oxidized coffee oil, not rust.
What the service involved
We stripped and cleaned both grinder assemblies, cleared the chutes, degreased the adjustment rings, cleaned the brew path, and ran the machine through full cycles until it poured to spec again. We diagnose the fault on the bench, then provide a written repair estimate and timeline.
One honest note: cleaning brought this machine back, but it did not make it new. The gaskets have hardened with age and heat, and that is not something a brush fixes. We are scheduled to come back with a full maintenance kit for this model, which includes the gaskets, fittings, and wear parts. Doing it in two visits keeps the lobby machine pouring in the meantime instead of sitting in pieces waiting on parts.
If your machine is showing the same screen
Run the cleaning program first. If the message comes right back, or drinks taste bitter and thin even after a clean, the inside probably looks like the photos above. That is a service call, and it is a routine one: the $150 deposit includes pickup, bench diagnosis, and return and is not credited toward repair.
We service WMF super-automatics across the Bay Area as an independent company, along with Franke, Schaerer, and the rest of the commercial fleet. See our WMF page for what we cover on these machines, or call (925) 999-4095 and tell us what the display says.
