Nuova Simonelli machines are generally reliable, but when an Appia II or Aurelia Wave starts throwing errors or behaving erratically, it helps to know what you’re actually looking at. Most problems fall into a handful of categories, and a lot of them have clear causes once you know the machine.
The Most Common Problems We See
Boiler and temperature faults are probably the most frequent call we get on Simonelli equipment. The Aurelia Wave uses a multi-boiler setup, with independent brew boilers per group head and a separate steam boiler, and the control system monitors each one. If a boiler probe fails or reads out of range, the machine will usually lock out and display an error related to temperature or heating. The Appia II uses a heat exchanger design (one boiler vessel with an internal heat exchanger tube for brewing), which is simpler than the Wave but still prone to the usual failure points: a failed heating element, a faulty thermostat, or a failed probe can cause the machine to heat too slowly, not hold temperature, or cycle off prematurely.
The other thing we see constantly is scale. Bay Area water hardness varies by municipality, and even with a softener in line, minerals accumulate inside boiler walls and on heating elements over time. Scale acts as an insulator, so the element works harder, runs hotter at the surface, and eventually fails earlier than it should. If your machine is past its descaling interval and temperature is inconsistent, that’s the first place to look.
Flow and pressure issues usually point to the pump or the OPV (over-pressure valve). A worn pump will lose prime or fail to build adequate pressure. You’ll notice it in extraction: shots pull too fast, thin, and weak. The OPV is adjustable and can drift over time, especially after a pump replacement if whoever swapped the pump didn’t re-set the valve. The Aurelia Wave’s volumetric dosing is also sensitive to flow consistency, so a partially blocked group screen or a failing flow meter can cause dose inconsistency that looks like a software problem but isn’t.
The brew group and solenoid valves are wear items. On a busy cafe machine pulling a few hundred shots a day, group gaskets and shower screens need attention every few months. A leaking group seal shouldn’t be left to run. Pooling water wicks into surrounding components and the repair cost climbs fast. Three-way solenoid valves (the ones that vent pressure from the group after a shot) clog with coffee oils and eventually stick open or closed. A valve stuck open means you lose pressure mid-shot. Stuck closed means grounds stay pressurized after extraction and you get a mess when you open the portafilter.
The Aurelia Wave’s touchscreen and control board do occasionally fail, though it’s less common than the mechanical stuff. Water intrusion is usually the culprit when electronics go, typically from a leaking group seal or steam condensation over time. If the display is glitchy or unresponsive, you’re probably looking at a ribbon cable or board issue. Either way, it needs a tech.
How a Tech Actually Diagnoses This
Good diagnosis starts with the error code log, not just the current displayed error. Simonelli machines store a fault history accessible through the service menu. A single temperature fault that cleared itself is different from twenty in the last eight hours. That history tells the story.
After that, it’s physical inspection: group seals, solenoids, probe connections, pump pressure test with a gauge, boiler TDS and scale check. On the Aurelia Wave, if there’s a volumetric problem, the flow meter comes out for inspection. Pressure profiling machines have additional valve assemblies that need separate testing.
The control board is almost always the last thing we replace, not the first. It’s expensive, and it’s rarely the actual problem when you work through the mechanical side first.
What Cafe Staff Can Safely Handle
A few things are fine to do in-house:
- Cleaning cycles: Backflushing with cleaning tablets on the recommended schedule, running the machine’s built-in cleaning programs. Skipping these is one of the fastest ways to create solenoid problems.
- Shower screen: Pulling and soaking the screen during cleaning. Quick and worth doing regularly.
- Filter and softener: Checking the softener cartridge and inline filter on schedule, running a water test strip. These are the biggest factors in machine longevity.
Beyond that, call us. Pump work, OPV adjustment, boiler access, electrical, and gasket replacement all need a trained tech. The boilers hold pressure. OPV adjustment affects extraction quality across every shot the machine pulls. And unauthorized repairs void the warranty.
When to Call Us
If the machine is displaying a fault that won’t clear after a cleaning cycle and a power cycle, get a technician in. Same if you’re seeing inconsistent pressure, temperature swings, or a group leaking more than a drop or two after a shot.
On the Aurelia Wave especially, don’t wait. These are complex machines with a lot of interdependent systems. A small water leak left for a week becomes a corroded connector or a ruined board. Early calls are cheaper than late ones.
Diagnostics can take up to a week; most repairs run 3–4 weeks. That is exactly why we recommend preventive maintenance: a maintained machine does not sit in a repair queue for a month.
