Steam stopped mid-shift? It’s almost always a blocked wand tip, a stuck steam valve, or low boiler pressure. Those three cover nearly every case, and they’re not equally likely. Blockage is far and away the most common culprit.
Start Here: Blocked Wand Tip
Milk proteins dry and clog the tiny holes in the steam tip fast, especially if the wand isn’t wiped and purged between drinks. If your steam dropped to a trickle, or you’re getting uneven spray from one side only, pull the tip off and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see through the holes, that’s likely your answer.
Soaking and clearing a blocked tip is barista-level maintenance, no tools, no machine disassembly. If that’s the whole problem, your staff can handle it. But if the tip soak doesn’t restore full steam, the issue is somewhere else in the steam circuit and it needs a tech. Don’t start guessing at the valve or boiler without a proper diagnosis.
One thing I’ve seen repeatedly: operators skip the wipe-and-purge between drinks during a rush. Milk gets sucked back up into the wand and bakes on. Good habits prevent most of this.
Steam Valve Problems
If the wand is clear but you’re still getting weak or no steam, the steam valve is next. On most commercial machines the steam knob operates a rotary or lever valve that opens a port to the boiler. These valves scale up over time, especially in hard-water areas like much of the Bay Area.
Symptoms: steam that’s hard to shut off completely, steam that comes out with the wand in the off position, or a knob that feels gritty and stiff to turn. Scale buildup can also partially block the valve seat, giving you weak steam even with the boiler at full pressure.
Accessing a steam valve on a commercial machine means draining a hot, pressurized boiler and disassembling valve components. On dual-boiler machines like a La Marzocco or Nuova Simonelli that’s a multi-step job with real burn risk if the machine isn’t properly depressurized and cooled first. This is a pro job. Getting it wrong costs more to fix than a scheduled service call would have.
Boiler Pressure Loss
If the wand is clear and the valve turns freely but steam is weak across the board, check your boiler pressure gauge. Steam boilers on commercial espresso machines typically run between 1.0 and 1.3 bar. If yours is sitting low or fluctuating, something’s wrong inside.
Common causes: a failing pressurestat (the switch that cycles the heating element to maintain target pressure), a failing heating element, a leak in the steam circuit, or a safety valve weeping and bleeding off pressure. Heavy scale buildup inside the boiler also reduces capacity over time.
A pressurestat going soft often shows up as inconsistent steam, fine in the morning and weak after a busy hour. Heating element failure is usually more abrupt. Either way, this isn’t something you can diagnose or fix at the bar. A tech needs access to the boiler internals, a multimeter, and usually a few parts.
How a Tech Diagnoses This
The sequence is straightforward. First: is the machine at normal operating pressure and holding stable? If yes, move to the steam circuit. With the wand removed and steam triggered, is flow coming out of the machine’s steam port? If yes, the blockage is in the wand assembly. If no, the valve or boiler is the issue.
From there the tech checks valve function (does it open and close cleanly, any grinding, any drip when closed) and then pressurestat and element continuity if the boiler isn’t holding pressure. The full diagnostic usually takes 20 to 30 minutes on a familiar machine.
The Bottom Line
Checking the tip and noting what your pressure gauge reads, that’s about as far as you can go without getting into the machine. Anything past that involves draining pressurized hot water and working around live electrical components. Getting it wrong causes burns and often creates a bigger problem than the original fault.
Diagnostics can take up to a week; most repairs run 3–4 weeks. That is exactly why we recommend preventive maintenance: a maintained machine does not sit in a repair queue for a month.
