If your La Marzocco Linea PB is pulling shots too cool or too hot, the most likely culprits are a PID misconfiguration, a failing temperature probe, or a worn boiler element, roughly in that order. Most cases I see are software or sensor issues, not a dead boiler. Here’s what’s likely going wrong, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call a tech.

The most common cause: PID setpoint drift

The Linea PB runs a dual-boiler PID system with independent control over the brew and steam boilers. Over time, especially after firmware updates or a power fluctuation, the PID setpoints can drift or get reset to factory defaults. Check your brew boiler target in the machine’s interface and compare it against your intended recipe. If the numbers look right on screen but shots are still pulling cold, the PID is reading accurately but something else is wrong. If they’ve drifted or reset, adjust them back and give the machine 20-30 minutes to stabilize before pulling shots.

This takes two minutes and costs nothing. Do it first.

Second most likely: a failing temperature probe (RTD)

The Linea PB uses RTD probes (resistance temperature detectors) on both boilers. When an RTD starts to fail, it doesn’t always throw an obvious error. It can read several degrees off without triggering a fault, so the PID is doing its job correctly based on bad data. You’ll notice shots consistently pulling off temperature no matter what you set, or stability getting worse over time with wider swings between shots.

A tech can test probe resistance with a multimeter and compare it against the expected resistance at a known ambient temperature. It’s a fast diagnostic. Probe replacement on a Linea PB is a legitimate repair, not a massive job, but it does require partial disassembly and comfort working around live components.

Third: the boiler element

If the brew boiler element is degrading, the boiler will heat but it won’t hold temperature under load during a rush. You’ll see this as shots pulling fine on the first one or two, then getting progressively cooler as the machine falls behind. Recovery time between shots gets noticeably longer.

A tech confirms this with a resistance check at the element terminals. If the element reads degraded or failed, it needs replacement. This is a larger repair with more labor than a probe swap, but it’s a known job on this platform and parts are available through authorized channels.

Fourth: scale buildup and grouphead heat loss

Less common, but worth mentioning. If the machine hasn’t been maintained, scale buildup inside the boiler or heat exchanger passages can reduce heat transfer efficiency. The PID thinks the boiler is at temperature because the probe is accurate, but actual water temperature at the puck is lower. Regular backflushing and descaling (per La Marzocco’s maintenance schedule, which varies by water hardness and usage) keeps this from creeping up on you.

Also check: is the machine sitting in a cold draft, near an AC vent, or not getting adequate warm-up time in the morning? A Linea PB needs a real warm-up. Give it 30 or more minutes before pulling the first shot, and make sure the grouphead is flushing regularly during warm-up.

What a tech actually does to diagnose this

When I get a call about a Linea PB temperature issue, here’s the actual sequence:

  1. Check shot consistency over recent history if the machine logs it.
  2. Verify PID setpoints and compare against the owner’s intended recipe.
  3. Check probe resistance on both boilers at ambient temperature, compare against RTD spec.
  4. Run the machine and monitor live PID readings against an independent temperature reference (probe in the portafilter basket or a calibrated thermometer).
  5. If element failure is suspected, check element resistance and inspect for visible damage.
  6. Look at scale level in the boiler if the machine is overdue for a descale.

Most of the time it resolves at step 2 or 3. The full diagnostic takes under an hour on a Linea PB because the machine is well-documented and parts are accessible.

What’s safe to check yourself

These are fine without a technician:

  • Check and adjust PID setpoints through the machine interface.
  • Confirm warm-up time is adequate (30 or more minutes).
  • Check that the water softener or filter is not exhausted, since this affects scale buildup and can indirectly affect temperature stability.
  • Backflush the grouphead and run a standard cleaning cycle.

Do not do these yourself unless you are trained on espresso equipment:

  • Probing live electrical components.
  • Replacing the RTD probe or element (involves draining the boiler, working near electrical terminals).
  • Any work that requires opening the boiler system.

This is a commercial machine running on significant voltage in a café environment. It’s not a consumer appliance. Getting a reading wrong or reassembling incorrectly creates real risk.

If you’ve confirmed the PID setpoints are correct and the machine has had a proper warm-up, you’re probably looking at a probe or element issue. Neither requires guesswork, and the diagnostic is fast on a Linea PB because it’s a well-documented platform. A tech will tell you what’s wrong before quoting repair cost.
