Water pooling under an espresso machine almost always traces back to one of three places: the group head, the solenoid valve, or a boiler fitting. A trained eye can usually tell which one within a few minutes. Two of those three require a technician.
Start Here: Where Is the Water Actually Coming From?
Before anything else, dry the floor and put the machine through a short cycle. Watch carefully. Leaks rarely come from where the puddle ends up. Water runs downhill, so a drip from the group head can travel six inches before it hits the drip tray or the floor.
The three most common sources, roughly in order of how often we see them:
Group head gasket. The gasket is the rubber ring that seals the portafilter against the group head when you lock it in. They compress over time, dry out, and eventually let water escape around the portafilter collar during extraction. You’ll usually see it as a slow drip or spray from the outside edge of the group head while the shot pulls. If the puddle shows up on the drip tray side rather than directly below the group, this is the likely cause.
Solenoid valve (three-way valve). The solenoid controls water flow to the group and depressurizes the portafilter after the shot ends. When the valve seat wears or a seal fails, you can get a slow drip even when the machine is idle. Mineral scale is a common culprit, especially in areas with hard water. The leak tends to appear underneath or slightly behind the group, and it may drip intermittently rather than during every cycle.
Boiler fittings and hose connections. These are less common but more serious. Fittings can weep at the joints from thermal cycling, vibration over time, or a connection that was never quite tight to begin with. You’ll typically see this as a slow, steady drip that doesn’t correlate with the brew cycle. Sometimes it shows up as white mineral deposits or staining on the machine’s internal frame before it ever becomes a visible puddle.
There are other possibilities: pump fittings, the steam wand connection, the water inlet solenoid. A thorough diagnosis rules these out systematically.
How a Tech Actually Diagnoses It
When we open the machine, we’re looking for a few things in sequence.
First, a dry-cloth wipe of every fitting and connection we can see, followed by a test cycle. Watching where moisture reappears first tells us the source, not the destination. Whether the drip is continuous or only happens under pressure narrows the list significantly.
Second, we check scale accumulation. In the Bay Area, water hardness varies by city depending on the source. Customers in harder-water areas tend to see solenoid and boiler issues more frequently; softer-water areas can see more gasket failures simply because those machines often skip descaling and run longer before a mineral-related failure catches up.
Third, we pull the panels and check the boiler fittings under pressure if the source is still unclear. This requires knowing the pressure specs and having the right equipment to depressurize safely, which is why it’s not something to improvise.
What You Can Check Before Calling
Note when the drip happens. Is it only during extraction, or does it continue when the machine is idle? A drip only during a shot points to the group head area. A continuous drip when idle points to the solenoid. That information saves diagnostic time and helps us come prepared with the right parts.
Also check whether the drip tray is just overfilling. A tray that isn’t emptied regularly looks like a floor leak from the outside. Rule that out first.
Beyond those two things, leave it to us. Gasket replacement sounds simple, and experienced operators do it in-house, but getting the correct gasket for your specific group, seating it at the right temperature, and recognizing when the solenoid also needs service, that’s where it goes wrong without experience. Solenoid service and anything near the boiler or pressurized fittings are not field repairs. Getting the reassembly wrong on a worn solenoid doesn’t fix anything and can make the situation worse.
When to Pull the Machine from Service
If the leak is from a boiler fitting or a pressurized connection, pull it now. A slow weep can become a fast failure, and a commercial kitchen is not where you want a pressurized steam or water event. If it’s a minor group head leak and you’re confident that’s what it is, you can sometimes run through a shift while you arrange service, but watch it closely. A gasket that tears further can release a lot more water without warning.
If you don’t know where it’s coming from, pull the machine until you do. Running a leaking machine without knowing the source is how small repairs turn into expensive ones.
