La Marzocco GS3 maintenance in Sunnyvale: new valves and a full descale despite a water filter
A GS3 is a commercial-grade machine living on a home counter, and this one in Sunnyvale gets used like one. The owner did the responsible thing and runs it on filtered water. This visit was booked as routine maintenance, and the machine looked fine from the outside.
Problem: Filtered water is not the same as scale-free water. A filter takes out chlorine and taste, and a softening cartridge slows the minerals down, but it does not stop them, and cartridges get changed less often than anyone plans. The owner had started to notice a slower warm-up and steam that faded partway through a pitcher of milk, which is a scaled boiler talking.
Diagnostics: We took the side panel off and went in with both boilers exposed. Looking down into the boiler port, the floor was carpeted with scale. The brass fittings on the flange were ringed with the same white crust, and one fitting came out corroded. The steam boiler heating element was the worst of it: a thick, rough mineral shell over the entire surface. Scale on an element works like a blanket, so the element runs hotter and longer to push heat through it, which is exactly the slow heating and weak steam the owner was seeing.
Solution: This became more than a wipe-down. Several worn valves were replaced while the machine was open. The heating element and the boiler were descaled, the loosened mineral was flushed out through the water paths rather than into the group, and seals and fittings were checked on reassembly. Both boilers were refilled and brought up to pressure on the gauges.
Result: The GS3 heats at its normal pace again and holds steam through a full pitcher, and the drip tray runs clear. The lesson of this one is in the photos: a filter is a good start, not a guarantee. The machine went home with a cartridge change interval and a descaling schedule based on what we actually found inside, not on what the filter box promised.
