When a Mazzer stops grinding, it’s almost always one of four things: a jammed burr set, a worn motor capacitor, a seized adjustment collar, or a failed micro-switch. Knowing which one you’re dealing with helps you describe the problem clearly and gets the repair done faster.
Motor Runs but Nothing Comes Out
This is the most common call. You hear the motor spin, but no coffee exits. Nine times out of ten, the burrs are jammed with a foreign object, compacted stale coffee, or a chunk of over-roasted oily beans that fused into the gap.
You can check around the hopper area for anything obviously visible without tools. Beyond that, properly clearing and inspecting the burr chamber on a Major, Mini, or Robur requires removing the burr carrier and checking for debris, glazed burr surfaces, or chips. If the motor sounds labored even after the obvious check, the burrs may be glazed from oily coffee or worn past the point of cleaning. A tech will pull the carrier, clean the chamber, assess the burr condition, and get alignment back where it needs to be.
Motor Won’t Start At All
If pressing the button does nothing, or you hear a brief hum and the motor cuts off, the capacitor is usually to blame. Mazzer grinders use a run capacitor on the single-phase motor, and these fail after years of use, especially in high-volume cafe environments. A failed cap means the motor can’t develop starting torque. You’ll hear the attempt and then silence, or a quiet hum.
Capacitor replacement involves working directly with electrical components that hold a charge. Getting the spec wrong (microfarad rating, voltage) causes another failure or damages the motor. On the Robur and Robur Electronic especially, motor access is tight and the stakes are higher. A tech handles this quickly and knows what else to check while the motor is open.
Grinding Stops Mid-Shift and Recovers Overnight
This is almost always thermal overload. The motor overheats, the thermal protector trips, and it resets after cooling. That’s why the grinder may appear to work again by the time it reaches the bench.
One thing you can check yourself: the ventilation slots on the grinder housing. If they’re clogged with coffee dust, clear them out. Some Mazzer motors also have an external reset button on the housing; if the thermal protector has tripped and the button is accessible, the grinder won’t restart until you press it.
If the problem keeps coming back after you’ve cleaned the vents, the root cause is something deeper. A failing capacitor makes the motor work harder than it should, and worn bearings do the same. Both require a proper inspection to diagnose and fix without guessing.
Grind Setting Slipped or Collar Won’t Move
On older Mazzers, the adjustment collar and its locking pin wear down over time. The grind gets progressively finer over a shift as vibration moves the collar, or the collar won’t turn at all because it’s caked with oil and grounds.
This sounds mechanical and simple, but the adjustment system on a Mazzer ties directly to burr alignment. Getting the collar back in the right position after any disassembly requires understanding the relationship between the burr carrier and the calibration marks. If that’s off, espresso quality drops and the burrs can suffer. A tech gets it sorted and calibrated properly the first time.
Electronic Version Isn’t Counting or Dosing Correctly
On the Major Electronic and Robur Electronic, dose problems often trace back to the doser micro-switch or the timer PCB. The micro-switch is a wear part that fails after heavy use. The PCB is less common but does fail.
Before calling, check that the doser compartment is clearing cleanly and that grounds aren’t packing up above the exit chute. Mechanical causes are more likely than electronic ones. If the mechanism looks clear, the repair is inside the electronics and needs a tech.
When to Call Us
If the grinder won’t run reliably, if the burrs need inspection or replacement, if you’re getting thermal shutdowns that keep coming back, or if you hear any noise from the motor itself, that’s the point to stop and get someone in. Internal work on a Mazzer isn’t dangerous if you know what you’re doing, but getting burr alignment right after repairs requires the right tools and experience. Done wrong, it costs more to fix.
