Why Your Grinder Seized Up
A jammed grinder that won’t power on is almost always one of two things: something hard got into the burrs (a pebble, a small stone, a cherry pit that survived processing), or the grounds compacted so tightly between the burrs that the motor stalled and the thermal protection cut power.
Before you do anything else, unplug the machine. Not just power it off. Unplug it from the wall.
Most Likely Causes, in Order
Compacted grounds. This is the most common cause. It happens after a long grinding session, grinding too fine for too long, or leaving old grounds packed in the chamber. The burrs get cemented together. You’ll often hear the motor hum briefly before it cuts out, or nothing at all if thermal protection triggered first.
A foreign object in the burrs. Pebbles are the classic offender, especially with lower-grade green coffee or bags that weren’t sorted well. A small stone will stop a burr set dead. If you heard a sharp crack or crunch right before it seized, assume foreign object first.
Thermal cutoff triggered. Many commercial grinders have a thermal fuse or cutout that trips when the motor overheats or draws too much current against a jam. Once it trips, the machine won’t start until it cools down, usually 10 to 20 minutes. Some models need a manual reset; others reset automatically.
Worn or misaligned burrs. Less common as a sudden failure, but if your grinder has been running rough for a while, a worn burr can shift and bind against the other burr. This typically shows up as progressively harder starts over days or weeks before it finally stops.
Safe Checks to Do First
Unplug and wait. If you think thermal protection tripped, give it 15 to 20 minutes fully unplugged. Then try a short power-on with no coffee loaded. If it runs freely, you had a thermal trip from a loaded burr set and can likely continue with adjustments (coarser grind, shorter sessions).
Empty the bean hopper. Remove whatever beans are in the hopper and check that nothing obvious fell in from above. You’re looking for non-coffee objects still accessible without disassembling anything.
If the grinder still won’t start after those two checks, stop there. Don’t keep hitting power. Don’t reach into the burr set. The jam is deeper than the surface and forcing it risks burning out the motor winding, which turns a straightforward repair into a much more expensive one.
What Not to Do
Don’t try to manually spin the burrs while it’s plugged in. Don’t blast compressed air into an assembled burr chamber (you’ll pack grounds tighter into the gaps). Don’t wedge anything metal into the burr gap. And don’t keep cycling the power switch against a mechanical jam. Stall-cycling a motor under load is one of the faster ways to cause serious damage.
How a Tech Diagnoses It
When a grinder comes in still seized, the first step is removing the top burr and inspecting the burr set and collar for foreign material. If the burrs are clear, the next check is whether the motor turns freely by hand (unplugged). A motor that spins freely by hand but won’t start electrically points to a failed start capacitor, a tripped thermal fuse that isn’t resetting, or a control board issue. A motor that’s stiff or locked is a mechanical problem: a bent shaft, a seized bearing, or something lodged deeper than a surface look caught.
Burr condition matters too. Fresh chip marks or gouges on the burr face are a dead giveaway that something hard went through. Those burrs need replacement regardless of whether the jam clears.

If the grinder is still down after the basic cool-down and hopper check, the problem is past what patience alone fixes. A stalled motor that was forced can have a burned winding. A thermal fuse that tripped under prolonged load sometimes needs replacement, not just time. Burrs that caught a stone may look intact but have micro-chips that’ll ruin grind quality and eventually damage the opposing burr.
These are all shop repairs. Trying to go further at home risks turning a modest fix into a costly one.
