A power outage changes the starting conditions for an espresso machine. The machine may restart normally, show a message, lose a water or heat function, trip power again, or reveal a leak after pressure changes. Staff need a safe sequence that preserves the first response instead of turning the bar into a series of resets.
Use the current manufacturer instructions for the exact model. This guide covers the record and safety boundary, not internal electrical or boiler work.
Check the area before touching controls
Look for water on the counter or floor, a wet plug or power strip, smoke, a burning smell, exposed wiring, hot surfaces, steam, or a displaced hose. Keep staff and customers away from the affected area. Follow the café’s electrical and facility procedure if the area is unsafe.
Do not pull a wet plug, reach through water, open a panel, or move a plumbed machine. If a breaker or protective device has tripped, do not repeatedly reset it. Record what happened and notify the responsible manager or service contact.

Record the outage and power return
Write down when power was lost, which equipment was affected, whether lights or other bar equipment changed, and when power returned. Note a storm, building work, generator transfer, or an interruption limited to one outlet if that information is known.
Record the espresso machine model, serial or asset tag, normal power source, display state, indicator lights, and any sound after power returned. Do not guess at voltage or open a panel to measure it.
Use one normal restart sequence
Follow the current manual for the installed machine. If it specifies a normal switch position, water check, or startup order, use that sequence once. Record whether the machine fills, heats, shows ready status, produces an error, or remains silent.
Do not hold buttons, borrow a restart combination from another model, or bypass an interlock. A machine that appears to restart after a nonstandard action may still have an unsafe condition.
Observe water and heat from outside
Look for water at the tray, visible connection, drain, reservoir, or below the cabinet without removing a fitting. Record whether water appears during fill, rinse, brewing, hot-water dispensing, steaming, or while idle. Do not disconnect a hose or insert a tool into a water path.
Use only the normal operator indicators to record heat or steam status. Keep hands away from hot water, steam, the group, and metal surfaces. Do not open the boiler area, test a thermostat, loosen a pressure fitting, or interpret one gauge position as proof that the machine is safe.

Record repeated errors and resets
Copy a display message, light pattern, or alarm exactly as shown. Note the stage at which it appears and whether the machine stops, tries again, or reaches a ready indication. Do not use a generic error list to choose a board, pump, heater, or sensor.
If power trips again, a burning smell appears, water reaches an electrical area, or the machine repeatedly resets, leave it off. Mark the equipment unavailable so another staff member does not restart it accidentally. A single normal retry is different from a repeated reset loop.
Check grinder and connected equipment separately
Record whether the grinder, brewer, water treatment, refrigerator, or other equipment also lost power. Keep each asset’s symptom separate. Do not assume that a shared outage caused every later fault, and do not restart several pieces of equipment at once if the circuit or area is uncertain.
For a grinder, keep hands away from burrs and do not reach into the hopper while energized. For a plumbed machine, do not pull it away from the counter to inspect a connection.
Prepare the service handoff
Use the locations hub for service-area context. Send the asset tag, model, outage and power-return time, normal restart action, display message, water and heat response, sounds, leak location, recent cleaning or service, and access rules.
Commercial articles must not promise uptime, response time, food-code compliance, or restoration time without a current source. Ask what should remain off, what access is required, and how the written estimate and approval boundary will be communicated.
The service facts are: deposits are $150 for standard brands, $175 for Jura and Miele super-automatics and home La Marzocco machines, and $250–550 for commercial La Marzocco equipment. Deposits include pickup, bench diagnosis, and return and are not credited toward repair. Extra bench time is $150 per hour for standard brands and $175 per hour for Jura, Miele, and La Marzocco. A written estimate comes after diagnosis and before repair work. Coffee repair coverage is 6 months on parts and 90 days on consumables. Diagnostics can take up to a week; most repairs run 3–4 weeks. The service area is 56 cities plus San Francisco for coffee equipment.

Deposits start at $150 and include pickup, bench diagnosis, and return. They are not credited toward repair.
Preserve the post-outage baseline
Once the equipment is left in a safe state, record what remains available at the bar and what is unavailable. If water, heat, steam, brewing, or grinding returned but another function did not, keep those observations separate. Note the first normal cycle only when the manufacturer’s instructions and the site’s safety procedure say operation can resume.
Do not erase the first display message after a restart. Save a photo, write the normal shutdown or restart action, and keep the outage time with the record. A later technician can compare the first event with the current symptom instead of relying on a staff member’s memory after several resets.
