If your Astoria espresso machine is pulling weak, thin shots or not building pressure at the group head at all, the usual suspects are the pump, the over-pressure valve (OPV), or scale buildup in the boiler or flow path. Here’s what a tech looks for, what you can safely check yourself, and when it’s time to call.
Start Here: Confirm the Symptom
“Not building pressure” can mean a few different things. The brew pressure gauge reads low (under 7-8 bar). Shots run fast and watery even with a tight grind. Or the machine dribbles with no real force. Which one you’re seeing matters because the cause is different.
If the gauge reads zero and there’s no water movement at all, that points to the pump or a blocked path. If you’re getting some pressure but it tops out at 5-6 bar, the OPV is the more likely suspect. If pressure dropped suddenly after running fine, scale or a failing pump is the place to start.
Most Likely Cause: Pump Wear or Air Lock
Commercial Astoria machines use rotary vane pumps built for continuous cafe use. A worn rotary pump loses prime or can’t hold its working pressure. You’ll often hear it straining louder than usual, or cycling without moving water.
An air lock is a simpler version of the same symptom. If the machine was recently moved, ran dry, or had a water supply interruption, air can get trapped in the pump. One thing worth trying yourself: run the steam wand to draw water through an alternate path and see if that restores normal flow. It’s low risk and worth ruling out before assuming the pump has failed.
If that doesn’t clear it, a tech will measure amperage draw and watch the gauge under load. A pump not building to spec under flow gets replaced. Rotary pump replacement on a commercial Astoria requires the right tools and torque specs. This is not a home repair, and doing it wrong risks a pressurized water leak.
Second Most Likely: OPV Out of Adjustment or Stuck Open
The over-pressure valve is a spring-loaded bypass that prevents brew pressure from exceeding its set point (typically around 9 bar dynamic pressure at the group). On commercial rotary pump machines the OPV is usually integrated into the pump body, though location varies by model generation.
When the OPV spring weakens or the valve seat wears, it bleeds off pressure before it reaches the group. The result: low brew pressure even when the pump is working. If the OPV were stuck closed instead, you’d see pressure spike too high.
OPV adjustment or replacement involves accessing internal components and requires a calibrated pressure gauge to verify the result. Without that verification you’re guessing, and running at 11-12 bar will stress the boiler seals and gaskets. A tech can set it correctly and confirm the reading in one visit.
Boiler and Scale Issues
Scale is an underrated cause of pressure problems. A heavily scaled boiler loses heating efficiency first, but scale can also partially block the path between the boiler and the group head. Several Astoria commercial models use a heat exchanger design where brew water travels through a pipe inside the main boiler, and partial blockage shows up as restricted flow and inconsistent pressure.
If your machine hasn’t been descaled in a few months and you’re on typical Bay Area municipal water, this is a real possibility. Descaling is one of the few things you can safely do yourself: use a food-grade citric acid or commercial espresso machine descaler and follow the manufacturer’s procedure. Don’t use vinegar on commercial machines. It damages rubber seals, gaskets, and O-rings under pressure, and leaves residue that affects taste.
If descaling helps, put a schedule on the calendar. For a machine running long shifts on Bay Area water, every 3-4 months is a reasonable starting point. Adjust sooner if you notice slower heating or flow changes before that interval.
Solenoid Valves and Group Head Flow
On Astoria machines with automatic dosing, the solenoid valve on the brew group controls water flow in and out. A partially stuck solenoid can restrict flow enough to look like a pressure problem. It’ll often show as slow preinfusion, sluggish flow, or the group not releasing pressure cleanly after the shot.
Diagnosing and servicing the solenoid involves disassembling the group. A tech can check the coil, clean the valve body if scale has gummed up the plunger, or replace the solenoid, usually in a single service call.
What You Can Check Yourself
A few things are low risk and worth trying before calling:
Run the steam wand to rule out an air lock. Run a backflush cycle to clear the group head. Confirm the water supply is on and pressure to the machine is normal. If the machine shows any error indicators, note them for the tech.
Descaling is also safe to do yourself with the right product, if you haven’t done it recently.
That’s the list. Anything involving opening the machine, adjusting internal components, or working near pressurized hot water lines needs a qualified tech. Getting it wrong isn’t just inconvenient, it can mean a scalding water leak or a repair bill larger than the original problem.
