Faema makes the espresso machines you see behind the counter at cafes that take their coffee seriously. The brand belongs to the Cimbali Group in Italy, and its claim to history is real: Faema invented the E61 brew group back in 1961, the design that still shapes how most traditional machines pull a shot. The current lineup runs the E71, the E61 Legend and E61 Jubile, and the electronically managed Teorema and Emblema. These are heat-exchanger and multi-boiler machines built to be rebuilt, which is exactly why they’re worth fixing instead of replacing.

The E61-style group is where most of our calls live. Group gaskets and seals harden under constant heat cycling, and once they go you get channeling, water weeping at the portafilter, and a slow drop in extraction pressure. Brew and steam solenoids stick or quit, so the machine either won’t cut water cleanly or stops steaming mid-rush. We pull the group, rebuild it with fresh gaskets and seals, and replace solenoids that no longer seal instead of nursing them along.

Because every one of these runs on a plumbed line, scale is the part that actually kills them. Heat exchangers and boilers crust over, heating elements burn out, and a scaled level probe makes the machine misread its water and short-cycle the element. We descale the boiler or HX, swap a dead element, and clean or replace the probe so the fill logic reads true again. On a busy bar with hard water, this is the difference between planned bench maintenance and a dark machine on a Saturday morning.

The rest comes down to pumps and electronics. A tired rotary pump won’t hold brew pressure, and on the Teorema and Emblema a failed control board takes out programming, dosing, or the whole panel at once. We test the pump under load and check the board against the actual symptoms rather than throwing parts at it.

For a commercial shop the cheapest move is staying ahead of scale. Run real water filtration sized to your volume, descale on a schedule instead of waiting for a fault, and have the group seals changed before they start leaking onto the wiring below. A group-head service each season keeps your shots consistent and stops a small drip from soaking the solenoids.
