Low steam pressure on a Nuova Simonelli usually comes down to three things: scale blocking the boiler, a failing pressure stat, or a degraded heating element. A tech can usually pin down the cause in one visit.
The Most Likely Culprit: Scale Buildup
In the Bay Area, water hardness varies by municipality but it’s rarely soft. San Jose and surrounding areas are classified as very hard, some zones running well over 10 grains per gallon. Scale (calcium carbonate) coats the inside of the boiler walls, the element sheath, and the steam pathways. Even a thin layer insulates the element and reduces heat transfer, so the boiler cycles off before reaching proper steam pressure.
On an Aurelia or Appia, this shows up as sluggish steam that takes longer to recover between uses, or pressure that sits at the low end of the gauge and never quite hits where it used to. If the machine hasn’t been descaled recently, scale is the first thing to suspect.
A tech will pull the heating element and inspect it directly. Heavy scale buildup is obvious. A descale with an approved acid solution can recover a lot of performance. Severe buildup sometimes means element replacement because the surface is too pitted to clean properly.
Pulling the element involves draining the boiler, managing pressurized fittings, and working near live electrical connections. Even if you’ve run commercial descale cycles before, check your service agreement and Nuova Simonelli’s guidance first. Some manufacturers require authorized service for boiler descaling, and doing it wrong can void coverage.
Pressure Stat Failure
The pressure stat is the switch that tells the boiler when to heat and when to stop. When it drifts low or fails, the boiler cuts out before building enough pressure for good steam. You’ll often also see inconsistent espresso temperature as a secondary symptom.
A tech will check actual boiler pressure with a calibrated gauge and compare it to where the stat is cutting out. If the stat is calibrated too low or failing to hold setpoint, it gets replaced.
This is a common wear item on machines that have been running several years in a busy cafe. Pressurestats weren’t designed for frequent readjustment. Turning the adjustment screw without a live gauge and knowledge of the target pressure is how you damage the boiler or create a safety issue. Checking the gauge reading on the front panel is fine. Everything beyond that is a tech job.
Heating Element Issues
If the element has partially failed, the boiler heats more slowly and may never reach proper steam pressure under load. You’d typically see longer heat-up times and weak recovery. A tech will check element resistance with a multimeter to confirm whether it’s drawing correctly. A failed element means draining the boiler, swapping the element, and refilling. Boiler work on a commercial machine involves electrical connections and pressurized components. Don’t improvise this one.
How a Tech Diagnoses It
The process is short. A gauge goes on the boiler to watch where pressure sits and where the stat kicks in. The element comes out to look at scale, and resistance gets checked. Usually the cause is obvious within 15-20 minutes. Scale and a stat issue can happen together, especially on a machine that’s never been properly maintained.
One thing worth checking first: a partially clogged steam wand orifice can mimic low steam pressure. Clean the steam tip and clear the orifice holes before assuming it’s a boiler problem. Sometimes it really is that simple.
What You Can Check Before Calling
