Faema E71E Pump Noise: What Rattling, Whining, or Surge Sounds Indicate

Rattling, whining, or surging pump noise on a Faema E71E usually means air in the line, a flow restriction, or a worn rotary pump. Here's how to read the sound and decide when to call a tech.

What the sound is telling you

Pump noise on a Faema E71E almost always points to one of three things: air in the hydraulic circuit, a flow restriction somewhere downstream, or a failing component in the pump assembly itself. The E71E runs a rotary vane pump, not a vibration pump, so the diagnostic path is different from a cheaper machine. Rotary pumps are quiet by design. When yours starts rattling, whining, or surging, something changed.

Air in the line (most common)

If the sound is a gurgle, a stutter, or the pump surges and then settles, air is the first thing to suspect. This typically happens after the machine sat idle over a weekend, after a water line was disconnected, or if the system wasn’t fully purged after a service call.

Start here: run the hot water wand for 20-30 seconds, then pull a few blank shots through the group without a portafilter. You’re flushing residual air out of the circuit. If the noise clears in a minute or two, that was likely it.

If it keeps coming back, air is getting in somewhere, probably a slow leak at an inlet line connection or a solenoid valve seat. That’s not something to chase yourself. A tech can pressure-test the circuit and find the entry point before it turns into a bigger issue.

A whining or high-pitched sound

A steady, high-pitched whine usually means the pump is working harder than it should. The most common cause is a flow restriction: scale buildup in the group head, a clogged solenoid, or a partially scaled boiler circuit. On the E71E’s multi-boiler GTi system, solenoid valves and flow restrictors sit throughout the machine, and any one of them can partially clog over time.

Check your descaling schedule. If the machine hasn’t been descaled in 12 months or more and you’re in a hard-water area like the Bay Area, scale is contributing. Proper descaling on an E71E means following Faema’s procedure for each boiler circuit separately, not just running solution through the group. The manual covers the sequence.

If descaling doesn’t change the sound, the pump internals may be worn. Rotary vane pumps have a service life. When the vanes degrade, pressure drops and the pump compensates by running louder and hotter. At that point a tech needs to measure output pressure and assess whether the pump is still in spec, and what the right repair is.

Rattling or mechanical knocking

A rattle that sounds like something loose is a different problem. On a rotary pump, this often points to cavitation, which happens when inlet pressure is too low and the pump is starved of water. Typical causes are supply pressure outside the acceptable range or a partial blockage at the water inlet filter.

The inlet filter is worth checking yourself. Turn off the machine, shut the water supply, and pull the filter screen at the inlet fitting. If it’s coated in sediment, rinse it and reinstall. That’s an easy owner-level task.

A rattle that changes pitch with temperature, or only shows up on cold starts, can indicate a loose motor mount or coupling. Running the machine with a loose mount pushes wear onto other components and makes the eventual repair more expensive. That one needs a tech.

Surge noise (pump speeds up and slows down)

If the pump pulses in an irregular rhythm, especially during extraction, check the pressure gauge. On a properly functioning E71E, brew pressure holds steady during a shot (roughly 8-9 bar is the standard range, though the E71E supports barista-adjustable settings). If the needle is fluttering or dipping, the pump is fighting something.

Likely culprits: a pressure sensor giving bad feedback, a solenoid that’s sticking or not fully opening, or a pressure relief valve with a worn seat that bleeds off pressure during normal operation. The E71E’s electronic controls talk to several solenoids during a shot cycle, and a partial failure anywhere in that chain makes the pump behave erratically.

None of these are owner-serviceable. A tech can test each solenoid’s actuation and pull sensor readings to isolate the fault.

What you can check yourself

Flush air from the circuit (hot water wand plus blank shots), check and rinse the inlet filter, and run the descaling cycle per the Faema manual. Those three cover the safe owner-level checks.

Everything else, including the pump assembly, pressure sensors, solenoid valves, and boiler circuits, belongs to a tech. The E71E’s multiple independent boilers and electronic controls mean one misstep can turn a single-component repair into a multi-part job. If a worn pump keeps running, debris can move into other components and raise the cost significantly.

Can I adjust the pump pressure on an E71E myself?
The machine does allow pressure adjustment, but it's not recommended without a calibrated pressure gauge and some experience. Incorrect settings affect extraction quality and can stress components. A tech can set it correctly in a short visit.
