Descaling removes mineral scale from the boiler and heating elements, but scale is only one of several things that restrict water flow through an espresso machine. If your pressure is still low after a full descaling cycle, the problem is somewhere else. The most common culprits are the pump, a clogged flow restrictor, or a solenoid valve that’s partially blocked.
What descaling actually fixes (and what it doesn’t)
Descaling dissolves calcium carbonate buildup inside the boiler, group head passages, and sometimes the steam wand. It does nothing for the pump itself, and it rarely clears a plugged flow restrictor or OPV (over-pressure valve). So if you ran the descaling cycle correctly and the shots are still thin, watery, or pulling way too fast, you’re dealing with a separate issue.
One thing to confirm first: did you fully flush the descaler with clean water afterward? Residual acid solution can temporarily affect taste and pressure readings. Run two or three full tanks of fresh water through, then test again.
The pump
The vibration pump in most prosumer and light-commercial machines is rated for a certain number of hours. When it starts to wear, it loses the ability to build pressure consistently. Shots take longer to start, pressure drops mid-pull, or the pump sounds labored in a way it didn’t before.
A portafilter pressure gauge (a blind basket with a gauge threaded in) will tell you quickly whether the pump is building 9 bar at the group. If you’re seeing 5-6 bar with a struggling pump sound, that’s your answer. Pump replacement involves opening the housing and working near mains voltage wiring. That’s a tech job, not a something to improvise on a commercial machine.
The flow restrictor
Between the pump and the group head there’s a small brass or plastic flow restrictor, sometimes called an orifice or gicleur. Its job is to regulate how much water the pump pushes through at a given pressure. The hole through it is typically 0.6 to 0.8 mm, and coffee oils and fine grinds can choke it over months of use.
Descaling solution doesn’t always reach this part effectively, and even when it does, oily deposits don’t dissolve in citric or tartaric acid the way mineral scale does. A tech will remove the restrictor, inspect it, and either clean it ultrasonically or replace it. Finding it requires opening the machine housing, and reassembly has to be done right or you’ll create a new pressure problem.
The OPV (over-pressure valve)
The OPV limits maximum pump pressure. If it’s been set wrong or has worn out, it bleeds pressure continuously, making the machine feel weak even if the pump is fine. If a portafilter gauge shows the pump building pressure that immediately drops back, the OPV is a likely cause. Adjustment and replacement both require opening the housing.
Solenoid valves
The three-way solenoid releases pressure from the group head when you stop a shot. If it’s stuck partially open or the internal seal is worn, it bleeds pressure during the brew cycle. You’ll often see inconsistent shots, maybe a faint hiss or water dripping from the group between pulls. Solenoid diagnosis and repair requires disassembly and a working knowledge of the machine’s internals.
The group head gasket
Worth checking if the machine has heavy use or hasn’t had maintenance in a while. A worn portafilter gasket lets water escape around the basket collar instead of forcing it through the puck. You’ll usually see drips around the collar during a shot. This is one thing you can safely handle yourself: it’s a rubber ring and takes a few minutes with no special tools.
How a technician diagnoses this
The sequence on a low-pressure call: portafilter gauge in, blank shot cycle, record static and working pressure. Then inspect the group, check the solenoid for proper actuation and seal, pull the flow restrictor and inspect it, test pump draw current if the readings warrant it. Most of the time the cause is clear within the first ten minutes.
Safe checks before calling
- Run a backflush with espresso machine cleaner (Cafiza or equivalent), separately from descaling. Backflushing clears coffee oils from the group and solenoid that descaling doesn’t touch.
- Check the portafilter gasket for wear. If you see collar drips during a shot, replace it.
- If the machine runs on a direct water line, verify supply pressure is in the normal range for your machine.
If those three don’t resolve it, the problem is inside the machine.
When to call us
Worn pumps, blocked flow restrictors, and failing solenoids don’t self-correct. If the backflush and gasket didn’t help and you’re still pulling weak shots, it needs a tech to open it up and diagnose it properly. The repair cost is almost always lower than months of bad shots and wasted coffee.
Diagnostics can take up to a week; most repairs run 3–4 weeks. That is exactly why we recommend preventive maintenance: a maintained machine does not sit in a repair queue for a month.
