If your espresso machine’s boiler gauge is climbing past the normal range, or you hear the safety valve hissing and weeping steam, the most common cause is a failed pressurestat. It’s a straightforward diagnosis, but not something to ignore. Excessive boiler pressure is a real safety issue.
How the pressure system works
Commercial espresso machines keep boiler pressure in a set range, typically 0.8 to 1.2 bar for steam boilers (the exact spec varies by manufacturer and model). The pressurestat is the device that does this. It reads pressure through a capillary tube and opens or closes the heating element circuit to hold pressure steady. When it fails, the heater can keep running past the setpoint.
The safety valve is your last line of defense. It opens automatically when pressure exceeds a rated threshold (commonly around 1.5 to 2.0 bar depending on the machine) and vents steam to keep the boiler from going higher. If yours is weeping regularly, that’s not a quirk. The boiler is regularly hitting that limit.
Most likely causes
Pressurestat failure. This is the most common culprit. The pressurestat has a set screw that controls its trip point, and the internal mechanism wears over time. The contacts can develop carbon buildup or fuse together, causing the pressurestat to stop cycling and letting the boiler run unchecked. On older machines with original pressurestats, this is almost always where I start.
Pressurestat mis-adjustment. Someone turned the set screw. This happens after a bench service where calibration wasn’t checked, or when a well-meaning staff member tries to fix a pressure problem without the right tools. The pressurestat has a small adjustment, but setting it correctly requires a calibrated pressure gauge and the manufacturer’s spec. It’s easy to get wrong.
Scale buildup around the pressurestat port. The capillary tube or the fitting where it connects to the boiler can accumulate mineral scale in areas with hard water. Scale can block or partially restrict the capillary, causing the pressurestat to read lower than actual boiler pressure, so it never signals the heater to shut off. Water hardness varies across the Bay Area (San Francisco’s municipal supply is actually quite soft, while parts of the East Bay run harder), so how much of a risk this is depends on your specific location and whether you have filtration. Machines without regular descaling are more likely to see this.
Faulty or worn safety valve. Less common as a primary cause, but worth knowing: safety valves can wear out and start weeping at pressures well below their rated trip point. If you replace the pressurestat and the valve still weeps, the valve itself may need replacement.
How a tech diagnoses it
First check is a calibrated gauge on the boiler to get a real pressure reading, independent of the machine’s own gauge (which may also be inaccurate). If the boiler is running above setpoint, the pressurestat is suspect. A continuity check on the pressurestat contacts tells you whether they’re stuck closed. If they are, replacement is the fix, not adjustment.
If pressure is actually within range but the safety valve is still weeping, the valve’s spring may have fatigued and its effective trip point has dropped. Replacing the valve is generally not expensive; the work is straightforward.
Cleaning the pressurestat port is part of the diagnosis too. On machines that haven’t been serviced in a while, I’ll clean the fitting and recheck before condemning the pressurestat.
What you can and can’t do yourself
You can: check the boiler gauge reading and compare it to the spec in your service manual, listen for the cadence of the safety valve (occasional brief hiss during heat cycles vs. constant weeping), and note whether the issue is new or has been developing over time. That information is genuinely useful when you call a tech.
You should not: adjust the pressurestat set screw without a calibrated pressure gauge and the manufacturer’s spec. Getting it wrong means the boiler runs either too hot or, worse, too close to the safety valve’s limit with no margin. Don’t bypass or remove the safety valve. Don’t keep running the machine if the gauge is significantly above spec and the safety valve is venting constantly.
The boiler on a commercial espresso machine runs at pressure and temperature that can cause serious injury. The pressurestat and safety valve are the two main things standing between a functioning machine and a dangerous one. Being close is not good enough here.
When to call a pro
If the safety valve is weeping regularly or the gauge is reading above normal, stop using the machine and call a technician. This is not a “run it until the appointment” situation.
Diagnostics can take up to a week; most repairs run 3–4 weeks. That is exactly why we recommend preventive maintenance: a maintained machine does not sit in a repair queue for a month.
