A grinding or rattling noise from a commercial grinder that wasn’t there yesterday is almost always a sign something mechanical has changed. It’s usually one of four things: a foreign object in the burr chamber, burr contact from wear or a loose adjustment, bearing wear, or a failing motor. Most are fixable, but the right fix depends on which one you’re dealing with.
The Most Common Cause: Something That Shouldn’t Be There
The first thing a tech checks is whether a foreign object got into the burr chamber. A small stone, a piece of a broken portafilter basket, or other debris can fall into the hopper and reach the burrs. When that happens, the sound is usually a sharp clatter or a brief metallic screech, not a steady grind.
If you hear a sudden loud noise followed by a change in grind texture or a jam, stop the grinder immediately. Don’t run more coffee through it trying to flush the object out. Empty the hopper and look into the chamber from the top. If you spot something obvious near the surface, remove it carefully. If you can’t see the cause, or the noise comes back, take the machine out of service. Continuing to run it risks chipping a burr or scoring the carrier.
Burr Contact and Worn Burrs
If the noise is a steady metallic grinding (not a one-time event), the burrs may be touching. This happens when the adjustment collar has slipped or someone accidentally dialed the grind too fine past the zero point. It also happens when burrs are worn down enough that the carrier shifts under load.
Burrs have a finite lifespan. On a busy espresso bar running standard steel flat burrs, a common replacement benchmark is somewhere in the 800 to 1,200 pound range, though it varies by burr size, coating, and daily volume. When burrs wear unevenly or the cutting edges dull, the grinder works harder and the sound changes. You’ll often notice grind quality suffer at the same time: inconsistent extraction, channeling, more fines.
Burr replacement involves removing the burr set, correctly seating the new set, and resetting the zero point. Get any of that wrong and you still have contact noise, or worse, burr damage on the first run. A tech does this with the service manual for your specific machine.
Bearing Wear
A steady low rumble or a rhythmic wobble sound (sometimes more of a vibration you feel than a noise you hear) usually points to bearings. The main shaft bearings support the burr carrier; when they wear, there’s runout in the rotation and you get that characteristic hum or growl that gets worse over time.
Bearing replacement requires disassembling the grinder down to the motor shaft, pressing out the old bearings, and pressing in new ones correctly. On most commercial grinders this is a multi-hour job for someone who’s done it before. Done wrong, you can damage the shaft or the housing. It needs the right press tools and the service manual for the specific model.
Motor Issues
Less common, but worth knowing: if the noise is electrical in character (a buzzing or high-pitched whine, especially on startup), the motor itself may be failing. Capacitor failure on single-phase AC motors causes a loud hum and a slow or failed startup. A failing motor winding can produce a smell along with the noise.
If you’re hearing electrical noise plus smelling something, unplug the machine and don’t run it again until a tech has looked at it. Electrical faults don’t improve on their own.
What You Can Safely Check
A few things you can do without risking further damage:
- Empty the hopper and look into the burr chamber for visible foreign objects
- Note whether the adjustment collar has shifted or feels loose
- Listen carefully to whether the noise is mechanical (metal-on-metal) or electrical (hum/buzz)
- Note when it started and whether it’s getting worse
Anything beyond that, including burr removal and reinstallation, bearing work, motor diagnostics, and any repair on a machine still under warranty, should go to a tech. Running a grinder with contact noise generates metal debris that ends up in the coffee. On a high-volume machine, it can accelerate damage to the housing and shaft quickly, turning a minor repair into a much larger one.
What We Check on the Bench
The bench diagnosis is straightforward. We run the grinder briefly without beans to confirm the noise is mechanical, not bean-related. We check the adjustment calibration and burr seating, then remove the upper burr carrier and inspect both burr faces and the carrier for play. If bearing wear is suspected, we check shaft runout with a dial indicator. We assess the motor separately for electrical noise.
Most of the time the cause is obvious once the machine is open: a chipped burr, a loose collar set screw, a cracked carrier, or visible scoring on the flat faces. Occasionally it’s subtler, like a burr that’s worn just enough to shift under load but looks fine at rest.
Time to Call a Tech
If you’ve cleared the hopper and the noise is still there, take the machine out of service. Continuing to run it risks metal debris in your coffee and can turn a small repair into a much costlier one.
