Water pooling under a commercial espresso machine almost always traces to one of three places: a group gasket, a brew valve seat, or a boiler or steam fitting. The leak shows up under the drip tray because that’s where the machine’s internals drain. Here’s how to figure out which one you’re dealing with.
The Most Common Cause: Group Head Gaskets
If water is dripping during or right after a shot pull, start here. The group gasket is the rubber seal inside the group head that mates against the portafilter. These gaskets wear down from heat cycling and detergent use. When they go, you get a slow weep around the portafilter collar that runs down into the drip tray or behind it.
You can often spot this before pulling anything apart. Lock in an empty portafilter, run water through the group, and watch for seepage around the rim. Worn gaskets also show up as a portafilter that feels loose or spins too easily under normal locking pressure.
Group gaskets are a consumable. Sizes differ by brand and model, so we match the correct part on the bench. Budget shops sometimes try to stretch them well past the recommended interval. That’s usually where the trouble starts.
Brew Valve and Solenoid Issues
The brew solenoid valve (the three-way valve on most machines) controls pressure to the group and dumps residual pressure after the shot. A worn valve seat, a cracked valve body, or a stuck plunger can all leak. This one’s trickier because the leak may be intermittent and the water path can be long before it shows up at the bottom.
Signs pointing here: water drips between shots when the machine is idle, or you’re getting residual water in the portafilter long after the shot ends. Sometimes you’ll hear a hissing that stops when you disconnect power.
This is not a DIY repair. Solenoid valves on commercial machines operate at high pressure. Getting the plumbing wrong or using an incorrect replacement part creates a safety issue.
Boiler and Steam Fittings
If the leak is constant and not tied to shot pulls at all, the source is probably a fitting on the boiler itself, a steam wand connection, or a heat exchanger joint. Brass fittings in high-heat, high-pressure environments corrode and develop small weeps over time. PTFE tape failures on threaded connections are common after any previous repair work.
Check the steam wand base where it threads into the boiler body. Also look at the sight glass fittings if your machine has one. Any fitting that’s damp to the touch while the machine is cold is suspect.
Boiler work requires draining the system and should be handled by a qualified technician. Don’t let this one wait. Moisture sitting near electrical components in the machine base is a real hazard.
Hot Water Line and Supply Connections
Worth a quick check before assuming it’s internal: look at the cold water supply line where it connects to the machine, and at the rotary pump inlet if accessible. A loose compression fitting or a cracked braided hose will drip constantly and looks like a boiler leak until you trace it properly. Bench testing distinguishes the supply side from an internal leak.
How We Diagnose It on the Bench
On the bench, we run the machine through its cycle while watching specific points in sequence: the group during extraction, the solenoid during the dump phase, boiler fittings at operating temperature. We also do a cold inspection first, because thermal expansion can mask leaks at temperature and reveal them when cool, or vice versa.
On a multi-boiler machine like a La Marzocco GB5 or a Synesso, each boiler circuit is checked separately. “Leaking under the drip tray” could come from the brew boiler, steam boiler, or the plumbing connecting them.
Food-safe dye tracing is sometimes used for leaks that are hard to isolate visually. It’s not common on espresso machines but it’s an option when the source genuinely can’t be found by sight.
What You Can Safely Do Yourself
If you’re a barista or manager in the middle of service, here’s what’s reasonable before calling someone:
- Tighten the supply line fitting at the wall or machine inlet. Hand-snug plus a quarter turn. Don’t overtighten.
- Check the portafilter fit and see if the leak is clearly coming from the group seal. If yes, you can run the machine carefully until pickup, but watch the drip volume. A small weep is one thing; water running freely means shut it down.
- Dry the base and run a short cycle to identify whether the leak is constant (supply or boiler fitting) or only during extraction (group or solenoid).
Don’t attempt anything involving the boiler, solenoid valves, or any fitting under pressure. The water inside a commercial espresso steam boiler runs above 120C. Steam burns are serious.
When to Call a Pro
Call the same day if: the leak is continuous, the water is near any wiring or circuit boards, or you can’t localize the source. A slow group gasket weep you’ve confirmed is cosmetic can wait until your next scheduled maintenance, but don’t let it run indefinitely.
