The Most Likely Culprit: Group Gaskets

Solenoid and flow meter work involves opening the machine and working around internal water paths under pressure. This isn’t something to attempt mid-service. A tech will flow-test each group, compare actuals to programmed targets, then decide whether the valve needs cleaning, rebuilding, or replacing.

The Hydra gives each group its own pump and boiler, with programmable 4-stage pressure profiling per group. Pump pressure problems affect all groups evenly. One misbehaving group points to that group specifically. Scale in the internal channels restricts flow and creates back-pressure that throws the profile off. This is more common in areas with hard water, which is a real concern in parts of the Bay Area.

A proper descale goes beyond backflushing. It involves disassembling the group and treating the internal channels, which takes time and the right chemistry. Worth doing on a schedule before something fails.

How a Tech Diagnoses It

When one of our techs looks at a Hydra with group head problems, the first step is a flow test: run each group and measure actual output against what’s programmed. If the numbers match, the flow meters are reading correctly. If they don’t, we determine whether the meter is drifting or whether actual flow is restricted.

From there, we check solenoid function, looking at whether the valve opens and closes cleanly, whether there’s hesitation, and whether there’s any drip after cutoff. We’ll pull the group apart to inspect the gasket and look for scale. If the machine hasn’t been serviced in a while, we’ll find deposits.

Pressure profiling calibration is also worth checking. If a previous tech adjusted group targets or a software update changed defaults, what looks like a hardware problem might be a settings issue.
