The Aurelia is one of the more reliable commercial espresso machines out there, but “reliable” doesn’t mean trouble-free. If you’re searching because something just went wrong, here’s what the common faults actually are, what causes them, and what repair involves.
Low or No Pressure at the Group
This is the most frequent complaint on Aurelias. The machine powers on, the pump runs, but extraction pressure is weak or the shot won’t pull at all.
Most likely causes, in order:
- Pump wear. Rotary pumps have a finite service life. A worn pump loses its ability to hold pressure. Pump repair or replacement is one of the more involved jobs on this machine.
- Solenoid valve clogged or failed. Scale and coffee oils build up in the solenoid, partially blocking flow. Sometimes a clean fixes it; sometimes the coil has burned out and needs replacement.
- Pressurestat or pressure transducer out of calibration. The Aurelia II and Wave models use pressure transducers to monitor brewing pressure. A faulty sensor can send bad readings and affect pump behavior. Diagnosis requires a gauge and a meter.
A tech will put a portafilter gauge on the group and watch pressure during extraction. If it climbs slowly or plateaus low, that points to the pump. If pressure looks fine at the boiler but not at the group, they’re looking at the solenoid or group circuit.
Low pressure on a commercial machine is not a wait-and-see situation. A worn pump that keeps running under load degrades faster. Arrange bench diagnosis before one repair turns into two.
Temperature Problems (Inconsistent Shots, Scalding, or Underextracted)
The Aurelia I and II use a heat exchanger design; the Wave uses a saturated group with independent brew boilers. Temperature stability is what these machines are known for, so when it starts pulling inconsistent shots, something has gone wrong in the thermal system.
What’s typically failing:
- Heating element: When an element starts failing, boiler temperature swings rather than holding steady. You’ll notice shots that vary between pulls.
- Thermostat or thermocouple: If the control board isn’t getting accurate temperature readings, it can’t regulate properly. Replacing a probe is usually a quicker repair than a heating element job.
- Scale buildup in the boiler: Heavy scale insulates the heating element, which causes it to overheat and then compensate erratically. This is a maintenance issue, not a part failure, but it leads to part failures if left long enough.
If shots taste bitter and the machine feels like it’s running hot, check your shot temperature with a thermometer. Sour, under-developed shots suggest the machine is running cold. Either way, the thermal system needs a trained tech to assess properly.
Steam Wand Not Steaming or Steaming Poorly
Weak steam or no steam usually comes down to one of two things.
First, check the steam tip. Milk residue hardens inside the tip holes over time. This is safe to handle yourself: soak the tip in a milk residue cleaner and use a fine needle to clear the holes. If that’s the problem, you’ll know within a few minutes.
If cleaning the tip doesn’t fix it, the steam valve is the next suspect. A stuck or failed steam valve keeps steam from releasing properly. That’s a parts-and-labor repair. Don’t crank the steam dial harder trying to push through a blockage either, it puts unnecessary stress on the valve seat and can make the repair worse.
Leaking at the Group Head
A slow drip from around the group after extraction is usually a worn group gasket. Gaskets are inexpensive consumables, but replacing them correctly means removing the shower screen and diffuser, then getting a proper seal on reinstall. A tech handles this in a routine bench service and checks the surrounding components while they’re in there.
If the leak is coming from above the group, from inside the machine, or from fittings under pressure, that’s more serious. Water on electronics causes cascading failures. Don’t wait on it.
Electrical Faults and Control Board Issues
The Aurelia’s control electronics are generally solid, but not immune to problems. Symptoms include groups that won’t respond to programming, volumetric doses that drift, or the machine not completing startup.
These faults need proper equipment to diagnose. A tech will use service mode to check sensor readings and solenoid firing. If a control board needs replacement, that’s one of the more expensive repairs on this machine. Get a diagnosis first; board prices vary by model variant, and it’s often not the board.
Worth knowing: a lot of “electrical” faults turn out to be a grounding issue or a corroded connector, not a failed board. That’s a much cheaper repair. Don’t assume the worst until someone has actually looked.
When to Call
Clean your steam tips and descale on schedule. Those are the main things you can do on your end to prevent service calls.
Everything else, including group leaks, pump wear, temperature faults, solenoid cleaning, and anything electrical, is a tech job. Commercial espresso machines run at pressure and temperature combinations that can cause real injury without the right training and tools. Getting a proper diagnosis first almost always costs less than ordering the wrong part and having a second tech undo the first attempt.
