The GB5 is a workhorse, and like any machine that pulls hundreds of shots a day, it has failure patterns techs see over and over. If you’re diagnosing a problem right now or kicking the tires on a used one, here’s what actually goes wrong and what it takes to fix it.
Temperature Instability (The Most Common Complaint)
This is the one we get called about most. The GB5 uses dual boilers, and when extraction temperatures wander or the machine can’t hold PID setpoints, there are a few usual suspects.
The most likely culprit is a failed or drifting PT1000 temperature probe. These fail gradually, which is why symptoms can be subtle at first. You’ll notice inconsistent shot timing or taste variance before any error shows up. A tech checks probe resistance against known values and compares readings across groups. Replacement means opening the machine and running a calibration afterward, so this one belongs with a tech.
Second most likely: a failing group solenoid. The GB5’s solenoids see constant cycling. When one starts to go, you get pressure irregularities at the group head, sometimes a slow drip post-extraction, or a group that doesn’t flush cleanly. Solenoid replacement means draining the relevant boiler and working through the group assembly. Not a quick fix and not a job to improvise.
Heating element failure is less common but not rare in older machines. One boiler not reaching temperature, or taking much longer than normal, is the typical sign. A tech will resistance-check the element first because wiring and connections often fail before the element itself.
Low or Erratic Pressure
If shot pressure feels soft or swings during extraction, the pump is the first thing a tech looks at. The GB5 uses a rotary pump and they do wear out. A worn pump may still move water but can’t hold pressure under load.
Before condemning the pump, a tech will also check the flow restrictor and pressure switch. A partially blocked restrictor mimics a weak pump exactly, and these parts are far cheaper to address. Telling apart a worn pump from a seized pump head from a downstream blockage takes a pressure gauge set and some experience. Replacing the wrong part is an expensive mistake.
Scale Buildup (Slow Decay, Big Consequences)
Bay Area water isn’t the worst for scale, but it isn’t soft either. The GB5 has two separate boilers, one for brewing and one for steam, and scale accumulates in both. You usually won’t notice until extraction times start drifting or the machine takes noticeably longer to come up to temperature.
Descaling a GB5 properly means more than running a solution through the brew circuit. Each boiler has its own procedure. If it’s been skipped for years, manual cleaning or boiler replacement may be the only realistic path. This is entirely preventable with a filtration setup and regular service. Once it’s advanced, it gets expensive.
Electrical and PID Issues
The GB5 has been around long enough that there are machines with aging electronics. The PID controller can fail, and so can the solid state relays (SSRs) it drives. An SSR that fails in the on position will overheat a boiler. One that’s intermittent shows up as random temperature drops.
Diagnosing and replacing PID or SSR components on a commercial machine running at line voltage is tech work. If you’re seeing unexplained temperature swings that aren’t probe-related, that’s a call.
What Owners Can Handle
Regular backflushing, keeping the drain tray clean, and swapping portafilter baskets when they wear out. That’s about the list. Everything else, anything involving the boilers, pump, solenoids, probes, or electronics, belongs with someone who works on these machines regularly. The cost of a misdiagnosis or a botched repair almost always exceeds the cost of a service call.
Repair Cost Ranges
Parts for the GB5 are widely available, which keeps costs reasonable compared to some boutique brands. A solenoid replacement with a service call typically runs a few hundred dollars depending on shop and location. Pump rebuild or replacement is more. Full descale service on both boilers, if it’s been neglected, can take several hours of labor. Prices vary; get a quote before authorizing anything.

When to Call Us
If the machine is in daily commercial service, don’t gamble on it. A half-day of downtime during a rush costs more than a service call.
