Franke superautomatics prompt you to clean because the machine is tracking actual usage, not a clock. Each prompt corresponds to a specific part of the brewing cycle, and ignoring them long enough causes buildup that affects shot quality and, eventually, the machine itself. Here’s what each one means and what actually happens inside.
The Main Cleaning Prompts and What They’re Doing
Brew group rinse. This runs automatically when you power up or shut down the machine. It flushes hot water through the brew group to clear coffee oils from the last cycle. You’ll see it prompt for a container under the spout. Let it finish. Dismissing it repeatedly means those oils stay in the group and go rancid overnight. Stale oil is one of the more common reasons a well-maintained Franke starts pulling bitter shots with no obvious mechanical cause.
Milk system rinse. If the machine has a milk frother or carafe unit (common on A-line MS models like the A400 MS and A600 MS), it prompts a milk rinse after each use or after a set number of milk drinks. This one matters more from a food safety standpoint than any other. Milk residue in warm tubing is a bacteria growth problem, not just a flavor problem. When the machine asks, run it. It takes about 30 seconds.
Cleaning tablets (brew group clean). This is the deeper cycle, typically triggered every few hundred cycles depending on your settings. The machine walks you through dropping a cleaning tablet into the designated chute or compartment, then runs a long automated cycle with rinse phases. The purpose is to dissolve the compacted coffee oils and fine grounds that routine rinsing doesn’t reach. On a busy cafe machine, this might come up daily. On an office machine running 20 drinks a day, maybe every few days. Let it complete fully without interrupting it.
Milk system cleaning. Separate from the rinse, this is a detergent-based clean of the milk circuit. Franke’s milk system cleaning agent (or a compatible alternative) goes into a small container, and the machine cycles it through the milk lines and frother. Skipping this one regularly leads to protein deposits that eventually restrict flow or cause the frother to underperform. When the flow is visibly weaker on steamed milk, this is usually why.
Descaling. Hard water deposits calcium scale inside the boiler and flow path over time. The machine tracks this and will prompt for descaling based on the water hardness you configured at setup. If the machine was never set up with accurate water hardness, it may prompt too infrequently for your actual water supply. Bay Area water varies widely by municipality. San Francisco runs relatively soft; parts of San Jose and other South Bay areas run very hard. If you’re in a harder-water area with no inline softener, check the water hardness setting in the machine’s configuration and adjust it if needed. Descaling uses Franke’s descaler or a compatible product and runs a multi-phase automated cycle.
What Happens If You Keep Dismissing
The machine will let you dismiss most prompts a limited number of times before it hard-locks. Once it locks, it won’t brew until the cleaning cycle completes. That’s intentional. Franke designed it that way because the machine can sense when bypassing a cycle would risk component damage or food safety.
Before it locks, the practical effects are: off-tasting coffee, reduced flow rates, inconsistent milk texture, and in the case of descaling, eventually heat issues as scale insulates the boiler element. None of this is dramatic at first. It creeps up on you over weeks.
What’s DIY-Safe vs. What Isn’t
Running the prompted cleaning cycles is fully user-serviceable. That’s what they’re designed for. Use Franke’s own cleaning products or verified compatible alternatives, follow the on-screen steps, and don’t interrupt cycles midway.
What gets more complicated: if the machine isn’t coming out of a cleaning cycle correctly, or if it’s erroring out during descaling, that’s usually a sensor, valve, or pump issue underneath the cycle prompt. Don’t try to bypass or reset those manually. Similarly, if you run a full descale and the machine still shows heat-related issues, scale may have already affected internal components that need hands-on inspection.
The brew group on Franke superautomatics is designed to be removed and hand-washed periodically. Franke’s own documentation covers this, and it’s genuinely worth doing every few weeks on a high-volume machine. If the group is sticking or feels gritty when you remove it, that’s a sign the automated cycles aren’t enough and it needs a manual clean.
When to Call a Pro
If the machine is completing its cleaning cycles correctly but you’re still seeing problems, the cleaning cycle itself isn’t the issue. Something mechanical or electronic is. That’s the line between maintenance and repair.
Specific situations worth a service call: the machine errors out during a cleaning cycle and won’t resume, the milk system keeps prompting a clean immediately after you run one (suggests a flow or sensor issue), you’ve run a descale and the machine is still slow to heat or throwing heat-related alerts, or the brew group shows visible wear or damage on inspection.
Franke superautomatics are well-built machines, but they’re also complex. The internal components aren’t something you want to start opening up without training and the right tools.
Diagnostics can take up to a week; most repairs run 3–4 weeks. That is exactly why we recommend preventive maintenance: a maintained machine does not sit in a repair queue for a month.
