When the opening doses behave differently from the rest of the morning, keep a short comparison. Write down the coffee, settings and time the grinder sat idle. Then record the first doses and later normal use without changing everything at once.
That record gives a technician a reproducible complaint instead of a general statement that the grinder “retains too much.”
Separate retained grounds from a changing dose
Retention describes grounds left inside the grinder. A dose that changes at the portafilter is an observation at the outlet. It does not, by itself, measure all the coffee still inside or identify the cause of the change.
Note where grounds are visible from a safe position and whether they fall after the motor stops. Keep hands and tools away from moving parts. Do not open the grinding chamber to try to measure retention.
Make the morning comparison useful
Keep a record of the hopper condition, coffee, grind setting, dose setting and cleaning performed before shutdown. During opening, record the dose weights and any adjustment you make for normal service. Add recent burr work or calibration.
If you change beans, cleaning, settings and dosing at once, label that change rather than treating the next result as a controlled comparison. A short consistent log is enough; there is no universal purge dose in this guide.
Clean the parts the manual permits
The Mahlkönig E65S manual gives separate outlet and grinding-mechanism procedures. It specifically warns that scratches in the outlet can hold grounds and affect dispensing. It also prohibits compressed-air cleaning and water entering the casing.
Use that procedure only for the E65S. For another grinder, find its own cleaning instructions, including the required shutdown and reassembly. Do not add water to beans, remove guards or use a homemade chute tool as a generic retention fix.
After the permitted cleaning, compare the same normal routine. If the problem persists, arrange inspection rather than declaring the burrs worn. The burr-replacement guide explains what to establish before ordering parts.
Stop using a grinder that jams, smells burnt or has an electrical fault. Send its model and the opening-versus-later record when requesting service. Internal alignment, drive and motor work belong to the technician.
