When a commercial espresso grinder won’t start, the motor itself is usually the last thing to blame. Most dead-grinder calls turn out to be a failed start capacitor, a worn-out switch, or a loose wire in the circuit. Here’s what’s actually going on inside the machine and what a tech will check.
Most Likely Cause: The Start Capacitor
Single-phase AC motors use a start or run capacitor to generate the phase shift that kicks the rotor into motion. When the capacitor fails, you press the power button and get a faint hum, or nothing at all. The motor is receiving power but can’t produce enough torque to get moving.
If your grinder hums but won’t spin, the capacitor is the prime suspect. A tech will discharge it safely and test it against the rated value on the housing. If it’s out of spec, it gets swapped. Capacitors are cheap parts, but they store a charge even with the machine unplugged, which is why pulling components without knowing how to discharge them safely is a bad idea.
Second Check: The On/Off Switch
Grinder switches take hundreds of hits a day. Coffee dust gets into the contacts, the mechanism wears, and eventually it stops making a clean connection. A completely silent grinder, with confirmed power at the outlet, often points here.
Before calling anyone: check that the hopper and upper burr carrier are fully seated. Most commercial grinders have a safety interlock tied to the hopper. If that interlock isn’t engaged after cleaning or a burr swap, the grinder won’t start even with a perfectly good switch. Reseating the hopper is a five-second check worth doing first.
If the interlock is fine, a tech will test the switch for continuity and inspect the contacts. Replacement switches for most commercial grinders (Mazzer, Mahlkonig, Eureka, Compak) are standard parts.
Third Check: Wiring and Connections
Loose or corroded wire connections cause more trouble than you’d expect. A wire that vibrated free from a terminal block, an oxidized crimp connector, or a burnt contact on the power board can all present as a completely dead machine.
Discoloration around terminals (brown or black marks) is a sign of heat damage and worth flagging to a tech. Thermal protection cutouts are part of this picture too. Many commercial grinder motors have an internal overload that trips when the motor runs too hot. Some reset on their own; others have a small reset button on the motor housing you press manually. If the cutout itself has failed, it may stay open regardless.
Tracing the wiring and testing connections requires disassembly and working inside the machine’s electrical circuit. That’s a tech job.
The Motor Itself
If the capacitor, switch, and wiring all check out, then the motor is the problem. The two common failures are seized bearings and failed windings. A tech can confirm both quickly. Motor replacement on a quality commercial grinder is almost always worth it. The cost is a fraction of what a new machine runs.
