If your commercial espresso machine isn’t reaching brew pressure, the three most likely culprits are a worn vibe pump, a misadjusted OPV (over-pressure valve), or a blocked solenoid. A portafilter-mounted pressure gauge is the right tool to confirm which one, but tracking down the cause and fixing it properly is tech work. Here’s what you can check yourself, and what a tech does when they arrive.
Start with the Water Supply
Before anything else, confirm the supply valve to the machine is fully open and the incoming line isn’t kinked. A pump starved of inlet water shows the exact same symptoms as a failing pump. It’s a quick check that’s caught me off guard on service calls before.
If the machine has an in-line inlet strainer, look at it. A visibly gunked-up strainer is something you can deal with without touching anything else.
What a Failing Pump Looks Like
The vibe pump is the first suspect on single-group machines with a few years of service. A healthy pump holds 8.5 to 9.5 bar at the group head during extraction. Once the internal piston wears, it can’t generate enough head pressure to get there.
Signs: the machine sounds labored or buzzy under load, or pressure on a gauge sits at 6 bar or lower during a pull. Sometimes the pump runs but builds almost no pressure at all.
Pump replacement on a commercial machine involves disconnecting power and the water circuit, and getting the right pump for your voltage and flow spec matters. Getting it wrong can damage the machine or create a shock hazard. This one’s a tech job.
OPV Calibration
The OPV is a spring-loaded bypass valve that limits maximum brew pressure by venting water back to the reservoir when pressure exceeds the set point. If the spring weakens or it’s been adjusted incorrectly, it bleeds off pressure before it ever reaches the group.
Symptom: the pump sounds fine and pulls adequate flow, but pressure caps out below 8 bar on a gauge.
Calibrating the OPV requires a blind portafilter with a gauge port and careful incremental adjustment while watching the reading. Overshooting the set point in either direction stresses the grouphead seals or produces under-extracted shots. It’s easy to get close and wrong in ways that cause other problems down the line.
Solenoid Valve Blockage
The three-way solenoid opens the path to the group head when you start a shot and vents residual pressure to the drain when you stop. A partially blocked solenoid restricts flow into the brew circuit and shows up as low pressure even when the pump is working fine.
Scale and coffee oils are the usual cause. If the machine hasn’t been descaled on schedule, mineral deposits can partially block the valve passages or prevent the valve from seating cleanly.
What you can check from the outside: listen for a clean, decisive click when you engage the shot. A struggling solenoid sounds weak or buzzy. Beyond that, inspection and cleaning of the valve body requires disassembly, and the seating surfaces are easy to damage if you’re not familiar with the valve.
Grouphead Seals and Shower Screen
If pump, OPV, and solenoid all check out, a worn grouphead gasket can let pressure escape around the portafilter, and a blocked shower screen will restrict flow at the puck. Gasket and screen replacement is routine maintenance that should be on a regular service schedule regardless.
When to Call Us
Low brew pressure usually has a clear cause, but finding it right means having a gauge and knowing what to look for at each step. If the water supply is confirmed good and the machine still won’t hold pressure, that’s the point to stop and get a tech in. A simple fix left to guesswork tends to become a more expensive repair.
