If your commercial coffee grinder has stopped grinding, the most likely culprits are a tripped motor, worn or jammed burrs, or a blockage in the grinding chamber. Here’s how to narrow it down quickly, what you can safely check yourself, and when to hand it off.
Start Here: Power and Motor Reset
Check the obvious first. Is the machine getting power? Many commercial grinders have a thermal overload protector that trips when the motor overheats, usually during a long rush. Unplug the unit, let it cool for at least 20-30 minutes (some models need up to an hour), then plug back in. Some models have a small reset button near the base or motor housing. Press it after the cool-down. Check your manual for the exact procedure since it varies by brand.
If the motor hums but the burrs don’t move, that’s a different problem. It points to either a mechanical blockage or a failed starting capacitor. Both look the same from the outside: hum, no spin.
If there’s no sound at all, check the outlet and any inline fuse before assuming the worst. Wiring and control board failures happen but they’re less common than a thermal trip.
Checking for an Obvious Jam
Jams are the most common mid-service failure. A stone in the coffee, a broken plastic piece, or compacted coffee cake can all lock the burrs instantly.
What you can safely check: turn the machine off and unplug it. Look into the grinding chamber with a flashlight. If you can see a visible blockage near the burr opening, a stiff brush can sometimes clear loose debris. Do not use metal tools or water. Do not reach into the chamber with fingers.
If you can’t see an obvious obstruction, or the burrs feel rough and gritty when you try to turn them by hand (unplugged), that’s a sign the problem is inside the grinding assembly. At that point, call us rather than dig further. Disassembling the burr carrier without the right technique can throw off the grind calibration, and on some models it voids the service warranty.
Burr Wear
Burrs don’t give out suddenly. Before they fail completely, they slow down, the motor strains louder than usual, and the grind gets inconsistent. On a busy cafe setup, flat burrs typically need replacing somewhere in the range of 500-1000 lbs of coffee. Conical burrs usually last longer.
A technician checks the cutting edges directly: sharp burrs have defined ridges that catch your fingernail. Worn burrs are rounded and smooth. They’ll also check the grind calibration and alignment while the burr set is out, which matters for shot consistency.
Burr replacement sounds straightforward, but sourcing the right burr diameter and profile for your specific model is where most DIY attempts go wrong. A tech will have or can get the correct OEM or compatible set, install it with proper torque and alignment, and calibrate before they leave. Getting it wrong once costs more than the service call.
Motor and Capacitor Failures
If the machine has power, no jam, and still won’t run, you’re looking at a motor, capacitor, or control board issue.
Capacitor failures are common on older single-phase motors. The capacitor is what gets the motor spinning from a dead stop. When it fails, the motor hums but won’t turn. Capacitors store electrical charge even when the machine is unplugged, which makes them genuinely dangerous to touch without proper training. This is not a component to probe with a multimeter unless you know what you’re doing.
Motor replacement is expensive. A good tech will confirm the motor is actually the fault before recommending that, not something upstream like the capacitor or a control board fuse.
On grinders with dose programming or digital timers (common on Mahlkonig, Mazzer, Nuova Simonelli equipment), there’s also a control board to consider. Board diagnostics take more time but can prevent an unnecessary motor swap.
What a Tech Does on the Visit
A technician runs the same diagnostic logic but with test equipment: voltage at the machine, continuity on the switch and fuse, capacitor tester, and motor loaded versus unloaded. It’s the same process, done faster and safely. We usually stock parts for common grinder faults and confirm repair timing after diagnosis.

If the thermal reset didn’t fix it, there’s no obvious jam, and the grinder still won’t run, stop troubleshooting and call a technician. Same goes if you hear metal-on-metal grinding or smell burning. Those symptoms move fast and turn a fixable repair into a full replacement.
