A used commercial espresso machine can be a smart buy, or it can be a money pit. The difference usually comes down to what you inspect before you hand over cash. This guide covers what to look for, which machines tend to hold up, and when you should walk away.
Start with the boiler
The boiler is the most expensive component to replace, so it gets the most attention in any pre-purchase inspection.
Look at the exterior first. Scale buildup around fittings, a white or rust-colored crust, and corrosion on brass components all point to a machine that ran on hard water without proper water treatment or regular descaling. That’s not a death sentence, but it tells you how the machine was cared for.
Ask the seller to fire it up. Once it’s at temperature, check that pressure holds steady. Watch the pressure gauge through the full warm-up cycle. If it climbs, overshoots, then drops back, the pressurestat (or PID controller on newer machines) may need calibration or replacement.
